How to Protect Your Hair from the Summer Elements

As the summer gets hotter in the Hamptons, it’s a good time to reevaluate our summer beauty routine, especially how to protect our hair from the summer elements. I sat down with Nexxus Salon hairstylist, Nicole Casamassima to get her summer haircare rules and must-follow tips.

Q: How can anyone protect your their from the summer elements?

A: If you’re going to the beach or hanging out by the pool, always make sure to bring a leave-in conditioner with you. Simply saturate hair from roots to ends to protect it from drying out from the salt water or chlorine. I love the Nexxus Humectress Luxe Lightweight Conditioning Mist to help create a barrier between your hair and the elements. It also works as a great detangler.

Q: Which styles to you recommend wearing to protect hair in the summertime?

A: My go-to hair styles during the summer are two wet braids (saturated with leave-in conditioner) or a messy topknot.

Q: What hair treatments and masks are great all summer-long?

A: I love a mask whether it’s for your face or hands or hair. I rotate depending on seasons and right now I go back and forth between the Nexxus Keraphix Damage Healing Masque and Nexxus Humectress Restoring Masque. Both are great at refreshing hair and giving it a little life. If I’m coloring my hair during the summer, I use the Keraphix masque to keep my colored strands in top shape.

Q: How can someone protect their hair color in the summer?

A: Protect your color with hats and scarves and always use color-safe products such as the Nexxus Color Assure Long Lasting Vibrancy Shampoo and Conditioner. If you have coarse or curly color-treated hair, try the Nexxus Color Assure Long Lasting Vibrancy Cleansing Conditioner to keep curls healthy and vibrant.

Q: Do you have any go-to hair tips or tricks to share?

A: Never go to bed with wet hair. Try to rough dry about 90% of hair before heading off to bed. Invest in a silk pillowcase for less stress on your hair. If you have curly hair, take it up a notch and invest in a silk bonnet. Trust me your curls will thank you!

Q: Do you have any tips on how to prolong a blowout during the summer months?

A: I honestly can’t live without a Velcro spa headband! I protect my hairline from water and products when washing my face by using this because a frizzy hairline isn’t cute. Also, invest in a good shower cap that fits you right. Try out Shhhowercap for cute selections of printed shower caps. Invisibobbles are the best invention ever created! Use them by pulling hair up in a topknot before going to bed to avoid tangles and frizz. These bands won’t create any dents in your hair!
